K.C. Chiefs Arrowhead Pavilion

DuctSox® a winner for K.C. Chiefs

For Kansas City sports fans, some of the hottest seats in town are found within the friendly confines of a unique structure heated by DuctSox.

The Pavilion at Arrowhead is a brand new addition to the city’s Arrowhead Stadium, home to football’s Kansas City Chiefs and Major League Soccer’s Wizards. The Pavilion allows Arrowhead to offer deluxe amenities other stadiums provide inside their luxury boxes: cocktails, premium food, live music and pregame highlights on wide screen TVs.

Chiefs management didn’t want their Wolfpack members, a prestigious group of season ticket holders for Chiefs footbal games, to miss the outdoor appeal of traditional tailgating. “We have always been a huge tailgating city,” said Ken Blume, Director of Development for the Chiefs and a decision-maker on Pavilion design. “So an outdoor party ambiance was what we wanted to create.”

Instead of a brick-and-mortar building, the Chiefs chose to shelter the Wolfpack in a 15,000-square-foot stretched fabric tent. The impressive, rigidly framed structure offers a festive four-season experience, while providing plenty of warm (or cool) indoor space to enjoy on Game Day.
COMFORT IS CHIEF CONCERN

Climate control presented one of the biggest challenges for the new Pavilion. Kansas City is a town which traditionally offers football fans a wide range of weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold and plentiful snow. The designer’s dilemma was finding a HVAC system which would keep the space comfortable, without creating harsh air currents or requiring unsightly metal ducts to disrupt the graceful, rounded contours of the structure’s interior.

The solution came when Tom Wilkinson suggested DuctSox to Bredson & Associates Inc., the engineering firm for the project. “They wanted it to be a unique atmosphere,” said Wilkinson, a sales engineer with manufacturer’s rep Jorban-Riscoe. According to George Koehly, President of Bredson & Associates Inc., Comfort Flow DuctSox met the Chief's two most critical criteria of enhancing the appeal of the tent's fabric structure and delivering an even air flow. . “The look of the DuctSox makes it better suited to fit the feeling of a tent, " said Blume.

BENEFITS BY THE SCORE

The choice of a DuctSox-based heating/cooling system offered a variety of other advantages to the Pavilion:
  • Color Options - DuctSox come in a variety of colors, so matching the Pavilion's interior was easy, and prevents from having to paint the duct as you would in using a metal system.

  • Zero Condensation - a common problem with metal duct is the condensation build-up, which would pose a problem in the tent's environment; DuctSox eliminates this concern. "It can get very humid in this area, and you don't want condensation dropping on your table while you're eating," said Wilkenson.

  • Easy Cleaning - Fabric duct can be removed and cleaned like any other fabric.

  • Fast and Easy Installation - pre-manufactured DuctSox were removed from their shipping cations, attached by cables to the tracks and connected to the air handler units in the heating/air conditioning syste. The entire installation was conpleted in a fraction of the time traditional ductwork projects require.

DUCTSOX FAN APPEAL

In the view of Jorban-Riscoe’s Tom Wilkinson, the new Pavilion is bound to become a permanent part of fan memories of Arrowhead Stadium. “At night, the whole Pavilion casts an impressive glow.” he said. “Light passes through both the tent fabric and the DuctSox, so it looks like a great big luminous bubble. It’s quite a memorable sight.”
